Local Law 152 Gas Piping System Inspection Deadline Extended

The deadline for the first ever cycle filing window for New York City Local Law 152 of 2016, which requires the inspection of gas piping systems at least once every four years, has been extended per a Service Notice issued by the NYC Department of Buildings.

Gas piping must be inspected every four years in New York City.

Owners of buildings in Community Districts 1, 3, and 10 in all boroughs must have their gas piping systems inspected by a Licensed Master Plumber (LMP) and the inspection certification submitted to the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) by the new deadline of June 30, 2021, or risk facing a Class 2 violation that carries a $10,000 civil penalty.

Buildings without gas piping systems must also comply. Owners will need to submit a Gas Piping System Periodic Inspection Certification (GPS2) to the DOB that is signed by a registered design professional stating that the building does not contain gas piping.

Exempted are single- and two-family homes and certain group homes, such as convents and monasteries with fewer than 20 occupants, in occupancy group R-3.

For buildings in Community Districts 2, 5, 7, 13, and 18 in all boroughs, the filing window began on January 1, 2021 and will end on December 30, 2021. To find out which community district your building is in, you can look it up by address at the NYC Department of Planning's website.
