Last week the RAND on the Roll intramural bowling league at Frames lanes in the Port Authority Bus Terminal wrapped up its 2013-2014 season with a stunning reversal of fortunes at the top. Following the fall season, the X-Men: Strykers had taken the lead, and after the first few weeks of the winter season they looked poised to bring home top honors for the year. But the young superheroes were sent back to Old School for a hard lesson in humility.
The Old School team, consisting of captain and RAND Chief Administrative Officer Christopher Walsh, RAND President (and league statistician) Stephen Varone, and CAD draftsmen/ringer Louis Schefano, took home the prize for most points, highest team average, and overall pin total. The tin trophy they received isn’t quite a brass ring, but a year’s worth of bragging rights goes a long way in the RAND office.
Rolling into second place was the aptly named I Can’t Believe It’s Not Gutter, whose team members (including yours truly) had minimal bowling experience before this season, proving that little knowledge can be a good thing.
While The X-Men: Strykers saw their power wane, they did managed to snag the podium by the tips of Wolverine’s claws. Thanks to their lead bowler, Sam “Professor X” Jacobs, the team snuck into third place on the last frame of the final game, knocking Easeturn Strikers down to fourth. The MIZZFITS, Two Guys and a Guy, Spare Parts, and Wheeler & Dealers filled out the team standings.
Individual performances were awarded to the male and female bowlers for High Average, High Game, High Series, and Most Improved. Ironically enough, all three “High” awards went to the same two bowlers, the aforementioned “Professor X” Jacobs and Wheeler & Dealers captain Michele Wheeler. Clearing the bar of low expectations for Most Improved bowlers were William Pitonyak and yours truly.
After a break for the summer, the RAND on the Roll bowling league will return for the 2014-2015 season. We will no doubt be in for another fierce competition and good times, tricked out in our RAND on the Roll bowling shirts. Stay tuned!
