Con Ed has added 17 new zones for converting to its gas service at no additional cost.

Last June, Consolidated Edison expanded its oil-to-gas conversion zones in Manhattan and the Bronx. This summer Con Ed has identified an additional 17 Area Growth Zones for expansion of its natural gas infrastructure in 2015. Buildings located within these zones may be eligible to connect to a Con Ed main gas line for heating at no additional cost, potentially saving up to several hundred thousand dollars on the conversion. This expansion brings Con Ed gas access to buildings in Queens for the first time.

If your building is located within one of the Area Growth Zones in Manhattan, Queens, or the Bronx and you would like to participate, you should submit the following to Con Ed:

  • A 2015 Area Growth Acknowledgment Letter signed by the customer (or authorized representative) submitted to gasconversions@nullconEd.com with your building’s zone indicated in the subject line.
  • A gas service request submitted to Con Ed at coned.com/es with your building’s zone indicated in the Scope of Work section.

The deadlines for submitting the documents are June 20, July 24, and August 27, 2014, depending on the zone your building is located in. Gas service for these zones is planned for fall 2015. Con Ed organizes buildings by zone to coordinate the required construction work, reducing disruption and noise in the affected neighborhoods.

Con Ed is expected to release additional Area Growth Areas for 2016 next summer. For more information on Con Ed’s expansion plans, please see their FAQ or call 800-643-1289.

To prepare for the conversion, Con Ed strongly recommends starting preliminary work, such as hiring a contractor and conducting chimney inspections, before receiving the Con Ed ruling. These preliminary steps take time, and if they are not completed by the deadline, your building may lose its eligibility for no cost access to Con Ed's gas infrastructure.

In addition, Con Ed recommends that owners work with a licensed professional to assess their building's internal conversion costs before submitting a gas service request.
