New Zones for Con Ed Gas Conversions

Con Ed has expanded its gas conversion program to 12 zones in Manhattan and the Bronx.

In October Con Edison listed 12 areas in Manhattan and the Bronx where buildings may be eligible to connect to a Con Ed main gas line at no additional cost when converting from oil to firm (all) gas. For buildings considering converting to gas but do not have an existing gas line, installing one can be prohibitively expensive—up to several hundred thousand dollars. Property owners interested in participating in this gas expansion program could save substantial capital costs, but they need to act fast.

Buildings that would like to receive a zone analysis for gas conversion must provide Con Ed with an acknowledgement letter identifying their applicable zone and a request for gas service. The deadlines for submitting the information is January 11 and February 8, depending on the zone. (The deadline for four of the 12 zones passed in December.) Con Ed is planning to turn on gas service for those zones by fall 2013, with additional zones to follow in 2014. (The new areas will be announced this summer.)

Please note Con Edison encourages its customers to work with a licensed professional to assess their internal conversion costs before submitting a gas service request. If your building needs help preparing a gas service request, please contact RAND at 212-675-8844; info@nullrandpc.com.

Converting to natural gas is a big decision for property owners. For those with buildings in one of Con Ed's growth areas, the first step is now a lot easier.
