Ask Our Experts: Oil-to-Gas Conversions

Even with the recent drop in oil prices, many co-op and condo boards are considering converting their building’s heating plant from an oil-burning system to one that burns gas, or to a dual-fuel system, which burns gas most of the time and oil when gas demand peaks, such on very cold winter days. At the heart of the decision is cost, and the economics of conversion differ depending on the particulars of each building.

In RAND’s Ask Our Experts video series, RAND Principal Peter Varsalona, PE discusses the considerations of converting a heating system from oil to gas, including the building’s overall fuel usage, the capital costs of new equipment, and the expected payback period for converting.
