RAND Project Recipient of Historic Preservation Award

Brooklyn, New York, March 2, 2018

The Park Slope Civic Council has selected RAND Engineering & Architecture, DPC’s exterior restoration of 153 Lincoln Place as a recipient of its 2017 Evelyn and Everett Ortner Preservation Award for excellence in exterior restoration. Inaugurated in 2014, the Ortner Awards recognize and encourage construction projects that preserve and make a positive contribution to the appearance and unique identity of Park Slope Historic District.

Designed by architects Lamb & Rich, and built in 1887 for a prominent Brooklyn couple, 153 Lincoln Place was once known as the Lincoln Plaza Hotel, an infamous hourly hotel, until it was developed into a 10-unit condominium in 2009. Constructed of brick with brownstone trim, the building’s most distinctive features includes a wood-shingled faceted turret, which sits atop a three-sided corner bay; a delicate pedimented dormer; gable, tower, and mansard slate roofs; several decorative brick, stone, and terra cotta friezes that run across the building; and a tall chimney seated upon a lion’s head corbel.

The exterior restoration and roof replacement project at 153 Lincoln Place initially began as a leakage evaluation, which uncovered significant defects that contributed to the premature failure of the roof. Based on the evaluation, RAND recommended a roof replacement and exterior repair program for the four-story Romanesque Revival townhouse.

RAND worked carefully with the board of Lincoln Condominium, contractor K Restoration & Roofing, management firm EK Realty, and the Landmarks Preservation Commission to maintain the building’s historical character and style. The restoration process included removing and resetting the turret’s terra cotta shingles; removing and replacing defective wood and metal window trim; and refurbishing damaged delicate finials.

RAND’s Project Architect Valerie Landscrina, RA and Senior Architect Ivan Mrakovcic, RA accepted the award at the March Park Slope Civic Council meeting. Also honored at the meeting were rehabilitation and exterior renovation projects at Tracy Mansion, Old First Reformed Church, and NYC Public Bath No. 7/Brooklyn Lyceum.

“153 Lincoln Place is a wonderful reminder of Brooklyn’s Gilded Age past,” said RAND President Stephen Varone, AIA, “RAND is proud of the role we’ve played in helping to restore and preserve this piece of New York history and Historic Park Slope’s unique character and identity for generations to come.”
